A weapon will no longer be destroyed. A failed grind attempt will result in the weapon resetting and it will loose 1 max grind attempt. ex.: If you grind a weopon to 3/10 and it fails on the 4th grind, it will reset to 0/9.

This article pertains to an item, mission or other feature from the offline version of Phantasy Star Universe.

Weapon grinding is the process of strengthening weapons, increasing their ATP/TP and PP by reasonable amounts. For a list of the stat increases by weapon type and maker, please see the individual weapons category pages.

All weapons start at 0, and can be ground up to an initial maximum level of 10. The downside to grinding is that, if grinding fails, the weapon will be destroyed.

How to grind

In order to grind, you must first have grinders with which to grind the weapon. The grinder must correspond to the grade of the weapon you wish to grind (e.g. you must have a Grinder/C type Grinder or better in order to grind a C-Rank weapon). Different Grinders of the same grade may be of different quality (represented by a number e.g. +1 or +4), thus affecting the success rate of the grinding. If you have the grinders, you must go to the Grinding Shop of the manufacturer of the weapon you wish to grind. For example, G.R.M. weapons can be ground at the G.R.M. Shop in Holtes City west on Parum, and Yohmei weapons are ground at the Yohmei Shop in Ohtoku City on Neudaiz. Kubara weapons need to be taken to the Junk Shop on the second floor of the GUARDIANS Colony to be ground. Also, remember to remove the weapon from the action palette before attempting to grind it. If you do not do so, you will not be able to grind the weapon.

A freshly unground weapon has a value of 0/10, as seen in the upper-right corner of the weapon's stat pane. The first number is the weapon's current grind value, which will increase with successful grind attempts. The second number is the maximum possible grind value. If a grind attempt fails, the weapon will be destroyed.

Grinding success odds

The odds for the grinding process to succeed are dependent on the following factors:

  • The current grind level of the weapon (ranging from 0 to 9 for grinding to still be possible)
  • The quality level of the grinder itself (from +1 to +5)

Just before the grind, this chances for success is described by the person behind the counter, when asking for confirmation. The possible messages and shorthand notations that will be used for the tables below are as follows. Please note that these are merely an indication, and that the actual chances DO vary even within these categories! Also note that "Guaranteed" is NOT 100%.

Shorthand In-game message Actual chance
Guaranteed There is no chance of failure. 95.0%~100.0%
Very High The probability of success seems very high. 80.0%~94.9%
High The probability of success seems high. 60.0%~79.9%
Fifty-Fifty The probability of success seems to be about fifty-fifty. 40.0%~59.9%
Low The probability of success seems low. 20.0%~39.9%
Very Low The probability of success seems very low. 5.0%~19.9%
No Chance There is no chance of success. 0.0%~4.9%
