Introduction
Bruce's Dungeon is the first party mission introduced to Phantasy Star Universe. It requires a team of 2-5 players (the 6th is a slot taken up by an NPC), and the focus is on teamwork and planning to clear two blocks within designated times to bring the NPC to the mission destination.
The mission is initiated from the Moatoob GUARDIANS Branch of Dagora City.
Rank S requirements
Rank is based on time and enemies defeated. Mission ends when Bruce reaches the terminal. All 91 enemies must be defeated for Rank S.
LV | Time | Time remaining |
---|---|---|
C | Under 7:00 | Over 18:00 |
B | Under 15:00 | Over 10:00 |
A | Under 20:00 | Over 5:00 |
S | Under 12:00 | Over 13:00 |
As with all party missions, Scape Dolls cannot be used. Incapacitation leads to immediate failure. Incapacitation of Bruce Boyde also leads to failure.

Walk through
B1 group gate
The mission starts when all party members touch the gate. Two people must go right, while the others go left and wait at the door for the key.
1 switch gate, key area
Ignore the small enemies at first. One person stands on the switch which opens the gate for the other person to pick up the key. One person stays to clears all the small enemies alone before rejoining the others. All the other players go on to the next area when the door is unlocked.
- If stepping on a switch opens a gate, then stepping off that switch will close that gate. This applies to all the switches here.
Unlit 3 large enemies area
This unlit area spawns 3 small enemies, then 1 large enemy with vandas, then 2 large enemies with vandas. Defeat all the enemies to open the gate and move on.
- The switches in unlit rooms just light the room. These switches can be ignored.
4 warps area
Bruce states (or does not) a phrase meant to provide a clue about the four warp portals. Later on in the mission, players are also presented two warps, the "correct" one also being based off this phrase:
Bruce's phrase | 4 Warps area | 2 Warps area |
---|---|---|
"The one-handed sword is easiest to wield." | Right | Left |
"My skills with a pistol were once legendary." | Left | Right |
"There is only one right answer. Which is it?" | Front (furthest) | Left |
[Bruce says nothing at all.] | Back (nearest) | Right |
- Directions should be considered as the players approaches the warps.
- Bruce will only say these phrases if the party leader is the first to approach the warps.
3 vandas, key area
Transported into the center of this area, 3 Vandas will spawn surrounding the players. Defeat all 3 to open the gate, pick up the key, and move on.
Crushers, key area
Unlock the door in the unlit area, then go through an area of crushers and move on. Someone picks up the key here.
4 switches area
Gate | Color |
---|---|
First | Red |
Second | Yellow |
Third | Green |
Fourth | Blue |
The switches can only be pressed one at a time. Standing on one of the 4 switches here opens one of the four gates to the key. Let one person control the switches here alone. One other person enters the 4 gates area. The others can wait at the door for the key.
- The colors for the 4 switches are revealed with goggles, though it's better to just memorize which is which.
- The person controlling the switches can see the first and second gate.
- 3 small enemies will spawn when someone passes the third gate.
- The fourth gate should be kept open until the gate runner returns, then go rejoin the others.
4 gates, key, 2 warps area
"Gate runner" runs passed all the gates, ignoring the 2 vandas at first. Pick up the key, then go back and defeat the 2 vandas. The correct warp is based on Bruce's phrase from earlier. 2 vandas will spawn at the 4 switches area. Defeat them, then rejoin the others.
1 large enemy area
This area spawns 4 small enemies, then 1 large enemy with vandas, then more vandas. Defeat all the enemies to move on.
B2 group gate
Gate opens when all party members touch the gate. Run past stalactite traps. Defeat 2 spawns of vandas to move on.
- Stalactite traps can be shot down, but doing so is usually a waste of time.
1 switch gate area
The first person stands on the switch to open the gate for the second person. The second person stands on the next switch to keep it open until everyone is through.
2 Bil De Vears, key area
This area spawns vandas then 2 bils. Defeat all the enemies to open the gate, pick up the key, and go back. Along the way back, defeat 3 vandas in a narrow area.
2 switch gates area
The first person steps on the first switch to open the gate for the second person. The second person stays on the left switch to keep the gate open for everyone. Someone stands on the right switch to keep the last gate open. Someone else stands on the last switch until everyone is through. Defeat 3 vandas to move on.
Unlit 2 bils area
This unlit area spawns vandas then 2 bils with vandas. Defeat all the enemies to open the gate and move on.
Split area
Turn right, run past stalactite traps, defeat 2 vandas in a narrow area, move on.
1 bil, key area
This small area spawns 1 bil with vandas, then more vandas. Defeat all the enemies to open the gate, pick up key and move on. Turn right to reach the last area.
3 bils, key area
This large area spawns vandas, then more vandas, then 1 bil with vandas, then 2 bils with vandas. Defeat all the enemies to pick up the key and open the gate. Only the party leader needs to go through.
Bruce's terminal
The mission ends when Bruce reaches the holographic terminal.
Avoiding incapacitation
- Stay at full health at all times. Be ready to heal yourself at any moment.
- Use star atomizers and sol atomizers.
- Avoid triggering bil spins and vanda damfoie.
- Bils can spin, dealing massive damage to anyone caught in the attack. They usually do this after being staggered. Using weapons or Photon Arts that can launch, blow away or wipeout enemies will almost always provoke the spinning. Avoid using these attacks unless the bils can be prevented from attacking.
- Vandas can also breathe fire at short range, similar to Damfoie. Vandas cannot be staggered during this. Avoid letting the vandas start this attack.
- Bruce's combat behavior is very aggressive and he will not avoid running into these attacks.
- Since Bruce is attached to and closely follows the party leader, it is preferable to have a high level force or ranger type character as the leader, so that Bruce is not regularly close to the enemies.
- Blow away attacks like grenade launchers can be used to safely pin groups of vandas into corners. However, this can waste time.
Saving time
- Launched, blown away, and wandering enemies take longer to reach to attack again.
- Avoid triggering bil spins and vanda damfoie.
- Bils cannot be attacked while spinning.
- Vandas' damfoie can slow down melee attackers.
- Time can be saved by having the party split up at the unlit area near the start of Block 1. After clearing the unlit area, have two people stay at the door and wait for the others to get the key. These two then ignore the key in the crushers area and go straight to the 4 switches area.
- Time can be saved by having the party split up at the split area near the end of Block 2.
- On C difficulty, time can be saved by having the party split up at the start of Block 2. After defeating the first vandas, have two people go back to the gate and wait for the others to get the key. These two then go on and the others will catch up.
- Bruce himself can deal good damage. However, this is very dangerous unless enemies are prevented from attacking.

Items
Body units
- Stun / Resist (bils)
SUVs
- Paradi Cataract
- Blitz Attacker (stuns)
- Grom Attacker (if cornered or frozen)
- Not Sturm Attacker
- Launch causes bil to spins
- Launching prevents melee attacking
- Burning prevents freezing
Freeze Trap EX
Protransers can keep most of the enemies constantly frozen with Freeze Trap EXs. By having others carry extra stacks of Freeze Trap EXs, the mission becomes much safer and faster. Stun Trap EX are less useful, as bils and vandas can still continue to spin and damfoie while stunned. Protransers can also run ahead, use items or pick up items while EX traps are active.
