About Ambition of Illuminus
Phantasy Star Universe: Ambition of Illuminus (ファンタシースターユニバース:イルミナスの野望) is the upcoming sequel to SonicTeam's 2006 multi-player online RPG Phantasy Star Universe. This article will detail all known facts about this upcoming game.
Release Information
Ambition of Illuminus is scheduled to be released in Japan some time in 2007 for PC, PlayStation 2 and Xbox 360. A free network trial for Japanese PC and PS2 users is currently being held; it will run from April 05 until April 26.
Network Trial Information
Japanese PC and PS2 users are able to participate in a free trial of Ambition of Illuminus this spring. (PS2 users will have to log in to their accounts on a PC with PSU installed in order to play the trial.) According to SonicTeam, the purpose behind this trial is to test connection and network stability. This trial will run from April 05 until April 26.
Participants in the trial will be able to either start a brand new character or carry over their current character from PSU. If a participant decides to carry over their current character, a copy of their character data will be made to the servers specifically set up for the trial of Illuminus while the original character data will remain on the main game servers. The reason for this being that no information, stats or items from the network trial will carry over to the original game. Once the trial comes to a close, all character data on the trial servers will be wiped. At this point, anyone who decided to carry over their character data will return to the original game where they left off.
Expansion or Sequel?
Since it was revealed in August of 2006, many people have dubbed Ambition of Illuminus as an expansion disc for Phantasy Star Universe. However, that is not the case; it is in fact a full sequel, according to an interview published in Famitsu magazine.
PSO in PSU?
Magazine scans and screenshots of the sequel have shown various Phantasy Star Online references, ranging from weapons such as the Durandal Repca (based on the 9* Durandal from PSO) and the Holy Ray, to screenshots showing a character in a HUmar outfit, fighting Rappies in what appears to be the Forest 1 level on Ragol from PSO. Currently there is no explanation as to exactly what this is, how PSO would tie into PSU, or even whether it will appear in the final release.
New Weapon Categories
Four new weapon categories have been revealed for this game, bringing the total up to an impressive 27 categories.
Photon Whip
Photon Whips (フォトンウィップ) are right-handed melee weapons capable of attacking multiple targets around the wielder. Vishi (ヴィシ) is currently the only known Photon Whip.
Slicer
Slicers (スライサー) are right-handed ranged weapons capable of releasing blades of photon energy at their target. Exact details on this iteration of the Slicer have not be released. (Assumptions are being made purely on the history of this weapon in the Phantasy Star series.) Hiken (ヒケン) is currently the only known Slicer.
Madoog
Madoogs (マドゥーグ) are left-handed TECHNIC-casting weapons. Despite greatly resembling MAGs from Phantasy Star Online, they should not be confused with PSO's support partner. A maximum of two TECHNICs can be attached to a Madoog. Nine types of this weapon are currently known: Pit (ピット), Gipit (ギピット), Rapit (ラピット), Girapit (ギラピット), Gorapit (ゴラピット), Roggapit (ロッガピット), Pegi (ペギー), Soniti (ソニチ) and Sato (シャト).
Shadoog
Shadoogs (シャドゥーグ) are left-handed ranged weapons. They will automatically shoot at enemies that are within range. Shadoogs seem to have an element already associated with them upon purchase, so players are not able to link Photon Arts to them. Six types of this weapon are currently known: Duke (ドゥーク), Giduke (ギドゥーク), Raduke (ラドゥーク), Giraduke (ギラドゥーク), Goraduke (ゴラドゥーク) and Roggaduke (ロッガドゥーク).
