Grade is rather similar to Star Rarity; It's an indicator of how good, or how expensive a piece of Equipment is. More importantly, it imposes an indirect usability requirement on the item, based on a character's current Type. Some types are incapable of getting even 'grade C' in certain categories (such as Hunters and Rangers for Rods). The 'basic' Types (Hunter, Ranger and Force) never get above Grade B in any weapon category.
Grades also play a part in Weapon Upgrading (see Grinding), as Grinders themselves have Grades.
